West Chillisquaque Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania

Built around 1815, the Sodom Schoolhouse, an Octabgonal Schoolhouse built by Scotch-Irish settlers, preceeds the Commonwealth's Common School Act of 1834. A local tavern owner, Lot Carson donated the materials and organization and construction of the building was the work of the locals--as was typical before government programs were established. This school was built to serve between 40 and 60 pupils, but often accomodated up to 100. The building was multi-purpose throughout the 19th century and was used as a school until 1915.The Sodom Schoolhouse, Circa 1815, The Octagonal Schoolhouse Of Sodom, Pennsylvania...The Sodom Schoolhouse, Circa 1815, The Octagonal Schoolhouse Of Sodom, Pennsylvania...
A Circa 1815 Octagonal Schoolhouse, this gem was constructed of stone by the charity, communal nature, and goodwill of the Sodomites of Pennsylvania, as a multi-use, public meeting house that was primarily used as a school building until 1915. The Methodists of Sodom were the Sodomites who used this building until roughly 1858; although, the building was of a multi-use function for much of the 19th century. The Sodomites no longer meet here nor do they own the building, as the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) now owns the Sodom Schoolhouse, the only known memorial to former Sodom Community in Pennsylvania.
