Lee County Texas Germans Were Drawn To Trailer Houses Early On…Mobile Homes, Lee County, Texas

The removal and reuse of buildings and/or building materials was popular long before the development of Green as a fashionable environmental religion in modern American society, this was especially true among common folk–as were the ”German” or Wendish settlers in Lee County, Texas. Most settlers in Lee County of German/Wendish origin built wood-frame dwellings for habitation on large plots of land. Their small agricultural plots were populated first with log-dwellings and, more commonly, with wood-frame and larger versions from the time of their migration to America in the mid-19th century through the mid-20th century. The removal taking place in the above image does not represent the usual size of a dwelling, but might very well have served as a temporary dwelling for a tenant farmer or hired hands ”picking cotton” or simply working remotely. This small wood-frame building is being hauled by the popular, long-lived Model T produced by Ford. Movable buildings are even more popular today in Lee County. Few old family homes survive. Most descendants demolished their family homes to make way for progress. This idea entertained brick masonry, ranch style dwellings for those of means and trailer houses for those with less. As farming has largley deminished and costs have risen, the county is in the past with little growth and economic develope in any major sense. As a result the trailer house or mobile home is ubiquitous in Lee County, Texas. Although, apparently, this was not far from home.
