City Water Works Montgomery Alabama Romanesque Revival Architecture

A view of the entire facade, this is a particularly nice municipal building designed in the Romanesque Revival style for the city of Montgomery Alabama. The little tower with its upper arched window is quite a matter of interest aside from the main, gabled facade portion of the building.

 While this specimen of ornate municipal buildings is not uncommon in cities that were eminent in the late nineteenth century, we often don’t expect to see such a great architectural work in such a miserable stateof disrepair.  And, no matter how many crusty, but great, buildings we see at the edge of town, we are always taken a back when stumbling upon this sort of edifice in the least fashionable part of town.  Almost every city of any wealth or stature in the last quarter of the nineteenth century might have had some sort of wondrous water works.  And even earlier cities, like Philadelphia, put much pride and aesthetic priority into their water related buildings.  We hope Montgomery will, at some point, take pride in their water works–even if it means removing it from the hands of an ineffectual city government.
