Fuck You John Zink… Former Newton Theatre, Brookland, NE DC

We say “Fuck You John Zink” due to the nasty contemporary, “wanna be” movie theatre-esque detail above the CVS sign that basically looks like a fist with a prominent middle finder. The former Newton Theatre building is situated at 3601 12th Street (and Newton Street), NE, Washington, DC.

Designed in the Streamline Modern Style, The Newton opened in 1937 as one of the many theatres in Washington DC designed by John J. Zink, the renowned regional theatre architect. The movie house closed in 1979, served as a music venue for a while, and is now a CVS. While we appreciate the adaptivereuse, we find the attempt at a theatre sign a grotesque one…
