While we don’t know whether this would ever have been the home of two gentlemen ”lovers” and/or ”a couple,” we know that this kind of arrangement certainly existed for men in general during this period and that for those who could conceive of quietly being together, this might have been the perfect room. Regardless, the attributes of the room are certainly attractive to any gay man renting a room today, which include the northwest quadrant, a fashionable part of town, a view, a certain roommate of choice, upper floors, and, most importantly, no children! We found this advertisement wonderfully full of odd misunderstanding that could certainly be twisted just right for that Historian who is out to prove something that cannot ever be proved, but only assumed that such rooms were the safe haven of a secret passion.
