Elitism Came In The Form Of A Bullitt Or A Dick in Old Philadelphia Society, Curious Clipping, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

In 1893, a publication--primarily of a gossip column nature, Town Topics: The Journal of Society (Volume 30), published this article regarding the social behavior and elitism of Mrs. Frank M. Dick, formerly Miss Julia D. Bullitt, daughter of John Christian Bullitt, the eminent lawyer of Philadelphia. The article touches on an social topic related to hotel culture and social behavior of 19th century America. The old elite and American Blue Blood of Philadelphia seemed relentless during this period at the denunciation of new monied families as well as other undesirables or less favored, a long-lived standard of the Philadelphia Establishment and social order. Julia Bullitt Dick went on to divorce Frank M. Dick (perhaps his endowment wasn't large enough), an eminent broker, to quickly remarry A. Haller Gross, another eminent Philadelphia lawyer and son of the eminent Philadelphia Surgeon Samuel D. Gross. One more time…apparently, one can even be eminent by association.
